A Brief History

As stated in the Constitution of Immanuel Baptist Church, our purpose is to maintain public worship of our Lord, Jesus Christ, to teach the scriptures, to promote the Christian lifestyle and to share Christ with all people.

Immanuel Baptist Church began when Grant Avenue Baptist Church held a tent revival on Eagle Street, just south of Nichols Street, and felt led to sponsor a new mission west of the city limits of Springfield.

1910--a lot was purchased at the corner of West Scott and North La Fontaine Streets and a one-room church building was erected.

1915—the Grant Avenue Mission organized into a church and was named the West Side Baptist Church with 122 charter members.

1930—the name was changed to Immanuel Baptist Church

September 1948—the first service in the new Carthage stone building

April 1963—the current auditorium was dedicated and the former building converted to the Youth Building

January 2003—the Family Life Center addition was dedicated


Immanuel Baptist Church has been and remains a very mission-minded church. In addition to sponsoring the mission that became Homeland Baptist Church, the church as ordained ministers as well as a home and foreign missionaries. At present, the church sponsors an after school program, AWANA Clubs for children and mission projects throughout the local area.
